Privacy Policy for Boat Log – GPS Tracking & Marine Weather

Effective date: October 13th 2025

Thank you for using Boat Log. Your privacy is important to us. This policy explains what data we collect, how we use it, and your choices.

Summary • We collect your location only to log voyages and show marine weather. • Voyage data is stored locally on your device. • We do not sell your data. • We do not track you across apps or websites. • We use Open‑Meteo to fetch marine weather based on coordinates you choose.

Data We Collect

  1. Location Data • Purpose: Record voyages (route, distance, speed, duration), drop MOB (Man Overboard) markers, and fetch weather for your current or fixed location. • Collection: When you grant “Always” or “While Using” location permission. If you enable recording, location updates may continue in the background to ensure accurate logging. • Precision: We request precise location for navigation accuracy.

  2. Voyage Data (Local) • What: Track points (coordinates, timestamps, speed), computed metrics (distance, duration, average/top speed), optional notes, and MOB markers. • Storage: Stored locally on your device using Apple’s data technologies (no cloud upload by default).

  3. Fuel Entries (Optional, Local) • What: Date, liters, amount, derived price per liter. • Storage: Stored locally on your device.

  4. Weather Requests • What: Coordinates sent to Open‑Meteo to retrieve marine weather (wind, waves, direction, period). • No personal information is sent—only coordinates necessary to get a forecast.

  5. Diagnostics (Optional) • If you enable diagnostics in settings, the app may log GPS status messages locally to help troubleshoot tracking reliability. These logs are not automatically sent to us.

How We Use Data • Provide core features: voyage logging, MOB markers, weather forecasts. • Display historical voyages and compute statistics. • Generate PDF exports of your voyages upon your request. • Improve reliability and performance (e.g., handling background tracking).

Data Sharing and Third Parties • We do not sell your data. • We do not share personal data with advertisers. • Weather: We call the Open‑Meteo API with coordinates to obtain forecasts. Open‑Meteo’s use of data is governed by their own policy. We do not provide them with any personal identifiers. • System services: Apple frameworks (e.g., Core Location, MapKit) process data according to Apple’s privacy policies.

Storage and Retention • Voyage and fuel data are stored locally on your device until you delete the app or remove entries manually. • Weather data is transient and not stored beyond what is necessary to show current forecasts. • Diagnostics (if enabled) remain local unless you choose to share logs with us.

Your Choices and Controls • Permissions: You can change location permissions at any time in iOS Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services > Boat Log. • Delete Data: Remove voyages and fuel entries inside the app, or delete the app to remove all local data. • Weather Location: Choose “Current position” or set a “Fixed place.” You can clear or change the fixed place at any time. • Diagnostics: Keep diagnostics off by default; turn on only if troubleshooting.

Security • Data is stored using Apple’s secure frameworks on your device. • We do not operate a backend storing your personal data by default. • PDF exports you create are saved to a file you control and share at your discretion.

Children’s Privacy • Boat Log is not intended for children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.

International Data Transfers • Weather requests to Open‑Meteo may be processed on servers outside your country. Only coordinates are sent; no personal identifiers are shared.

Legal Basis (EEA/UK) • Consent: For accessing your location and enabling background tracking. • Legitimate Interests: Operating core app features like computing voyage statistics and showing weather results you request.

Changes to This Policy • We may update this policy from time to time. Material changes will be reflected by updating the effective date and, where appropriate, notifying you in‑app.

Contact Us • Email: joernolav@gmail.com • Please include your app version, iPhone model, iOS version, and a brief description of your question.
